This is what I know:
My paternal genes aren’t those of my dad.
There are other ways to say this, like “My father isn’t my biological father.” But my linguistically specific self doesn’t like that. What is a “biological father”—are there “non-biological fathers”? Like robot fathers?
The way I first said it feels the most true.
I have recently learned the truth about my genes, though this fact was not the start—nor is it the end— of my state of confusion. It’s just a thing that I now can point at, hold onto.
Recognizing that it is both our genetic make up and our upbringing that make us who we are, paternal genes contribution totally makes sense.
